In 1945, thousands of Marines attacked the island of Iwo Jima in a battle thsy resulted in horrific casualties on both sides. The three surviving soldiers (Ryan Phillippe, Adam Beach and Jesse Bradford) who were photographed raising the flag there were taken back to the United States to raise money for the war effort.
