In the fairytale world of Frell, Ella (Anne Hathaway), beautiful young woman, is forced by a magical spell to obey every command she is given. Tired of being taken advantage of by her cruel stepmother (Joanna Lumley) and wicked stepsisters (Lucy Punch and Jennifer Higham), Ella sets out to find Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox), the fairy who originally cast the spell. Helping Ella along the way is Slannen (Aidan McArdle), an elf who wants to be a lawyer, and Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy), whom Ella falls in love with at first sight.
