Francis (Owen Wilson), Peter (Adrien Brody) and Jack (Jason Schwartzman), three brothers who have not spoken to each other in a year, hop aboard a train for a spiritual quest across India that they hope will help them reconnect with one another. After a series of quarrels fueled by mistrust and over-the-counter pain killers, Peter and Jack discover that Francis is secretly taking them to locate their estranged mother (Anjelica Huston), who has joined a convent. Later, abandoned by their train, the brothers find themselves lost in the middle of the desert and face a life and death situation that will decide the direction of the rest of their jouney.
