Zack Mayo (Richard Gere), a young man with an attitude problem, unexpectedly follows in his father's footsteps and joins the Navy. Deciding to pursue his dream to be a pilot, Mayo immediately butts heads with Sgt. Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.), a tough drill instructor who sees that Mayo might have potential if he wasn't so self-centered. While Foley attempts to whip him into shape, Mayo meets Paula (Debra Winger), a girl who works at a local factory, and must decide what he wants to do with his life. Directed by Taylor Hackford.
