A kind grandfather (Peter Falk) reads a story to his sick grandson (Fred Savage) in the hope that it will help pass the time and raise the boy's spirits. When the Dread Pirate Roberts (Cary Elwes), a once simple farm boy, attempts to rescue his love, the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn), from the foul Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), he is joined by two companions, (Mandy Patinkin and Andre the Giant), his former enemies. As the tale of sword fights, vile swamps, kidnappings and true love plays out, the grandfather does his best to finish the story despite being interuppted by his grandson at all the mushy parts.
