Upon his release from prison, kind-hearted conman Wendell Baker (Luke Wilson) gets a job at a retirement hotel near the Texas-Mexico border. With his longtime girlfriend Doreen (Eva Mendes) and good friend Reyes (Jacob Vargas) still giving him the cold shoulder after his last scam, Wendell bonds with three residents of the hotel (Seymour Cassel, Kris Kristofferson and Harry Dean Stanton). When it becomes apparent that the head nurse (Owen Wilson) is running a scam of his own, Wendell helps his new friends organize a rebellion, while they help him win back his love.
