Melvin Udall (Jack Nicholson), a cranky, obsessive-compulsive writer, is entrusted with a dog after his gay artist neighbor (Greg Kinnear) is mugged and beaten. With his daily routine already dangerously off course, Melvin finds that Carol (Helen Hunt), the only waitress who will tolerate him, must leave work to care for her sick son.
