Saul (Richard Gere), a scholar, diverts himself from the crisis in his marriage to the beautiful but tormented Miriam (Juliette Binoche) by coaching Eliza (Flora Cross), his 11-year-old daughter, who competes in spelling bees. Encouraged by her father, Eliza begins to feel a mystical pull toward words and letters.
