While stationed at Brideshead Castle during WWII, Captain Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode) remembers back on his involvement with the Marchmain family, the Catholic, aristocratic owners of the grand estate. Charles is first drawn to Sebastian Flyte (Ben Whishaw), a charming and provocative young man, before falling for his sophisticated sister, Julia (Hayley Atwell). As Charles' ambition draws him deeper and deeper into the Marchmains' world, he discovers that the allure of their secret lives is matched by Lady Marchmain's desire to preserve their way of life.
