After finding a CD containing the memoirs of ex-CIA agent Ozzie Cox (John Malkovich) in the gym where they work, Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt) and Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) formulate a harebrained scheme to blackmail him. Even though the disc contains sensitive data about previous CIA indescretions, Cox, bitter and disgruntled, doesn't simply give in to their demands and sets out to recover his memoirs on his own terms. Harry Pfarrer (George Clooney), a federal marshal who is sleeping with Cox's estranged wife (Tilda Swinton), becomes entangled in the increasingly sticky situation when he witnesses Chad attempting to break into his home.
