Danny Noonan (Michael O'Keefe) works as a caddy at a local country club and plays golf in his free time. Pursuing the club's annual caddy scholarship, Noonan decides to caddy for Judge Smails (Ted Knight), the club's co-founder, in the hopes of gaining the favor of the stuffy, old man. But, when Judge Smalls and his partner are challenged to a match against an eccentric millionaire (Rodney Dangerfield) and the cool, confident Ty Webb (Chevy Chase), Noonan is called into action and must make a choice between his scholarship and sinking the most important putt of his life.
