In 1753 Venice, notorious ladies' man Giacomo Casanova (Heath Ledger) enjoys a life of leisure and promiscuity. But, feminist author Francesca Bruni (Sienna Miller), who writes under the name of a man, sets out to reveal his secrets and alert the women of Venice about his deceptive ways. When the two finally come face to face, Casanova falls deeply in love and vows to give up his former life in an effort to win her heart. After learing that Francesca's fiancé Paprizzio (Oliver Platt), who was chosen by her mother, is coming to town, Casanova intercepts him upon arrival and invites him stay at his house, while assuming his identity in an effort to get closer to the woman he loves.
