After complaining about how terrible his life is, Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey), a local news reporter, gets a visit from God (Morgan Freeman). In need of a vacation, God challenges Bruce to see if he can do a better job, giving him all of his powers and responsibilities. While Bruce enjoys the perks of his new position, the world's problems and prayers begin to build up in his absence. And, when his attitude and weird behavior begin to push away his loving girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston), Bruce is forced to reassess his priorities and take responsibility for his own actions.
