Newspaper cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) becomes obsessed with tracking down the Zodiac, a serial killer who terrorized San Francisco with a string of murders and cryptic messages to the media during the 1960s and 1970s. Though he has no personal stake in the case, Graysmith slowly pieces together missed clues and identifies possible suspects with the help of newspaper reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.) and Inspector David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo), even as the crimes are forgotten by the rest of the city.
