Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) is a successful store owner when he agrees to coach basketball at his old high school in Richmond, CA. Disgusted by the poor performance of his players, Carter enforces a regimen of study time and practice designed to improve their abilities on and off the court. When the team's scoring begins to improve but grades begin to fall, he benches the entire team, outraging the school and community.
