After Russian rebels take over a nuclear missile site, the US Navy calls upon Captain Frank Ramsey (Gene Hackman) to lead the USS Alabama, a nuclear strategic missile submarine, on a patrol mission, and be at the ready should a pre-emptive strike be necessary. Captain Ramsey, one of the few commanding officers in the Navy with combat experience, chooses Lieutenant Commander Ron Hunter (Denzel Washington), who has an extensive education in military history and tactics, as his executive officer. Whenthe order comes through, the crew prepares to launch. But, when follow-up message is interrupted by an attack on the sub, the already tense situation boils over as Ramsey and Hunter battle over their course of action. Directed by Tony Scott.
