After being busted by the feds for taking bribes from stage parents, children's television star Rainbow Randolph (Robin Williams) is fired and finds himself living on the streets. Taking Randolph's place is Sheldon Mopes (Edward Norton), a sappy, squeaky clean performer whose lovable fuscia rhinoceros, Smoochy, instantly captures the hearts of his young audience. As Smoochy climbs in the ratings, Mopes begins a relationship with network executive Nora Wells (Catherine Keener), and an increasingly embittered Randolph targets Smoochy to exact revenge and reclaim his status as America's sweetheart.
