When Tom Sanders (Michael Douglas), a happily married father, is passed over for a promotion at the high-tech firm where he works, he learns that CEO Bob Garvin (Donald Sutherland) has given the job to Meredith Johnson (Demi Moore), a woman with whom Tom had an affair with ten years earlier. As Tom's new boss, Meredith immediately makes an aggressive attempt to continue their affair, but Tom refuses. Fueled by ambition and rejection, Meredith puts Tom's career and marriage on the line by filing sexual harassment charges against him. To defend his good name and prove his innocence to his wife (Caroline Goodall), Tom countersues and hires fiery lawyer (Roma Maffia) to represent him in a trial that promises to be a long, uphill battle.
