After his father's death, rebellious teenager Kale Brecht (Shia LaBeouf) is placed under house-arrest after punching his Spanish teacher. Content to watch TV and play video games, Kale is brought back to the reality of his situation when his mother (Carrie-Anne Moss) takes away all of his favorite forms of entertainment. With nothing left to do, Kale begins to spy on his neighbors, including an attractive new girl, Ashley (Sarah Roemer). But, what starts out as a way to pass the time, becomes an intense fight for survival when Kale, his best friend Ronnie (Aaron Yoo) and Ashley witness a murder in the house next door.
