In a small town Louisiana beauty parlor, a close-knit circle of friends come together during the best and worst of times. Visiting Truvy (Dolly Parton), the shop's owner, are Shelby (Julia Roberts), a diabetic who's set to marry a Southern lawyer (Dylan McDermott), her bossy mother M'Lynn (Sally Field), Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine), an ill-tempered woman with a quick wit, and Clairee Belcher (Olympia Dukakis), a recent widow.
