Jimmy Starks (Guy Pearce) is a confident, intense, smooth-talking salesman certain he's on the brink of a big score. When his car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, Jimmy decides to pass the time by visiting a roadside fortune teller, Vacaro (J.K. Simmons). Although Vacaro assures Jimmy that a windfall is on its way, he ends the reading abruptly without explanation. Brushing it off as nothing more than a con, Jimmy goes back to work. But, when his boss suddenly agrees to financially back Jimmy's business venture, the details of the deal make Jimmy think that Vacaro knew more than he said, ultimately leading to an his obsession with his ultimate fate.
