When her fiancé Charlie (Timothy Hutton) runs away with a young model, Kate (Meg Ryan) follows her ex to Paris in hopes of winning him back. On the plane, she sits next to Luc Teyssier (Kevin Kline), a handsome petty thief who hides a stolen necklace in Kate's bag. When the bag is stolen in Paris, Luc confesses to Kate and the two set off together to locate Charlie and find the missing necklace. But, as the mismatched pair spends more time together, they discover that, despite their wishes to the contrary, they have feelings for one another, and their trip to France takes off in an entirely new direction.
