While visiting her husband's aunt in a nursing home, unhappy Southern housewife Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) befriends Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy), a pleasant, outgoing old woman. After making a instant connection, Ninny tells Evelyn the story of Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth Jamison (Mary-Louise Parker), two young friends who ran a diner together in 1920s Alabama. Enthralled with Ninny's stories and inspired by the Idgie and Ruth strength, Evelyn learns to be more assertive and gains the strength she needs to change her life for the better.
