After being estranged from his family for nearly a decade, struggling actor Andrew Largeman (Zach Braff) returns home to New Jersey for his mother's funeral. Stunned to find himself in his hometown after such a long absence, Largeman meets old acquaintances around every corner and does his best to avoid an inevitable confrontation with his father (Ian Holm). But, when Largeman meets Sam (Natalie Portman), a girl who is everything he isn't, her warmth and fearlessness give him the courage to open his heart to the joy and pain of life.
