Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angela Gennaro (Michelle Monaghan), two private detectives in Boston, are hired to investigate a little girl's kidnapping when people in the neighborhood are reluctant to talk with police. When an arranged exchange with a drug dealer is botched, resulting in the girl's death, Patrick and Angela blame themselves and have difficulty moving past the tragedy.
