John Halder (Viggo Mortensen), a German literature professor in the 1930s, is a good, decent man who finds his novel advocating compassionate euthanasia unexpectedly cited by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda. In a climate of prosperity and nationalism, Halder embraces his newfound notoriety in order to advance his career. But, as the Nazis extend their power and agenda, Halder's decisions put people close to him in danger and implicitly involve him in the Nazis' horrible acts against the Jews.
