Dan Dunne (Ryan Gosling), an engaging yet troubled history teacher in an inner-city junior high school, lives a complex double life. By day, he gives inspired, heartfelt lectures about history and the power of change. But, after class is out and basketball practice is over, he smokes crack cocaine to numb his pain and feelings of helplessness. When one of Dan's students, the strong, stoic Drey (Shareeka Epps), discovers his secret, they form a bond that neither of them quite understands.
