John Hancock (Will Smith) is a reluctant, sarcastic superhero who falls out of favor with the public when the property damage caused by his heroic deeds begins to outshine the crime he prevents and the lives he saves. Intent on giving him an image makeover, publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) convinces Hancock to turn himself over to the authorities, so the public can realize just how much they really need him.
