After seeing the same conspicuous stranger three times in a day, Albert (Jason Schwartzman) hires a pair of existentialist detectives (Lily Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman) to help him answer life's great questions. While the detectives insist on spying on every moment of Albert's waking life, the young man embarks on a series of metaphysical crises that disrupt his work life and leave him with even more questions than when he began. As Albert continues his search for answers, he meets Tommy Corn (Mark Wahlberg), a fireman and fellow existential explorer, and the pair compare notes as they seek ultimate truth.
