Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret), a renowned Chilean poet and diplomat forced into exile, is granted sanctuary by the Italian government. Arriving on the isle of Capri, he hires an uneducated man named Mario (Massimo Troisi) to be his personal postman. Mario slowly gains Pablo's confidence and develops an appreciation for poetry, which he uses to win the heart of a beautiful waitress named Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta).
