When worldwide communications systems go haywire and an enormous unidentified object is spotted orbiting Earth, David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), an MIT graduate who works at a cable company, decodes a hidden message and discovers that aliens are planning to destroy major cities around the world. When Levinson's prediction come true, the survivors of the US attacks, including Marine Corp. fighter pilot Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman), converge on Area 51 and try to formulate a plan to prevent the aliens from enslaving the human race.
