After learning that her rich father (Steve Guttenberg) plans to marry a self absorbed gold-digger (Jane Sibbett), Alyssa Callaway (Ashley Olsen) runs away from home and bumps into Amanda Lemmon (Mary-Kate Olsen), a street-smart orphan who's about to be adopted by a family she doesn't like. Discovering that they look exactly alike, the girls concoct a plan to switch places and unite Amanda's caseworker (Kirstie Alley) with Alyssa's father before he goes through with his upcoming marriage and Amanda's adoption is finalized.
