Jacey (Billy Crudup) and Doug Holt (Joaquin Phoenix) are two poor brothers who fall in love with the three aristocratic daughters of the formidable Lloyd Abbott (Will Patton). Shy and quiet, Doug longs for the heart of Pamela (Liv Tyler), a vivacious and popular girl who seems out of his league, while Jacey is much more calculating in his efforts.
