After marriying hastily, Walter Fane (Edward Norton), an earnest, socially awkward bacteriologist, and his beautiful, but shallow wife, Kitty (Naomi Watts), leave London for China, where Walter works in a government lab. Discovering that Kitty has cheated on him, Walter gives her the choice of joining him on a relief effort to treat a cholera outbreak in a small inland village, or face divorce.
