Already on the verge of losing his job as a jingle writer, Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) travels to London for his daughter's (Liane Balaban) wedding only to learn that she has asked her stepfather (James Brolin) to walk her down the aisle. Leaving the reception to hide his devastation and make his flight home, Harvey heads to the airport and learns that he has missed his plane anyway. While trying to drown his sorrows at an airport bar, Harvey ends up striking up a conversation with Kate Walker (Emma Thompson), a 40-something workaholic who ends up reinvigorating his lust for life and helps him see what really matters.
