After being discharged from the Army, Colonel William Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins) takes his three sons (Brad Pitt, Aidan Quinn and Henry Thomas) and moves to the mountains of Montana in order to escape the corruption of early 20th century American society. As the three brothers grow up in the wide, open country, they become inseparably close. But, when Samuel returns from Harvard with the beautiful Susannah Fincannon (Julia Ormond), the resulting romantic feud sets of a series of tragedies, stetching from World War I through Prohibition, that rip the family apart.
