Young Californian Isabel Walker (Kate Hudson) goes to France to visit her pregnant sister, Roxeanne (Naomi Watts). Finding Roxanne, a darkly romantic poet, sad and broken after being jilted by her husband, Charles-Henri de Persand (Melvil Poupaud), Isabel complicates matters by entering an affair with Charles-Henri's uncle (Thierry Lhermitte), an older, married French diplomat. In the scandal the follows, the Walker girls' American idealism goes head-to-head with the Persand's French rationalism when it is discovered that Roxanne posseses a paiting worth millions of dollars.
