Hoping to become a serious artist, John Talia Jr. (Trevor Morgan), a talented but troubled young man, befriends Nicoli Seroff (Armin Mueller-Stahl), an elderly, disillusioned, alcoholic painter, during the summer of 1974. Against his father's (Ray Liotta) wishes, John and Nicoli form a tenuous relationship that ultimately helps John understand what it means to be an artist and reawakens Nicoli's sense of purpose.
