Fred Madison (Bill Pullman), a jazz musician, fears that his wife, Renee (Patricia Arquette), is having an affair. Suddenly, he finds himself accused of her murder and sent to jail. At the same time, a mechanic, Pete Dayton (Balthazar Getty), is seduced by Alice Wakefield (Patricia Arquette), a sultry temptress, who is cheating on her gangster boyfriend. Upon Fred's release from death row, the two men's lives begin to intertwine in surreal and inexplicable ways.
