Dorothy (Judy Garland) is a sweet young girl living on a quiet farm in Kansas. When a cyclone hits her house, she is transported to the magical Land of Oz. There, Dorothy encounters three fantastic companions, the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), the Tin Man (Jack Haley) and the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and sets out on a journey to visit a great Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan) in his emerald castle.
