Coming from a poor family, Carl faced an uphill battle to achieve his goal, and it became even more challenging after he lost part of his leg in an accident. His mentor in the Navy, Billy Sunday (Robert De Niro), was a tough taskmaster opposed to the idea of African Americans being trained as divers who gradually came to respect Carl.
