After meeting Freder Fredersen (Gustav Frohlich), the son of Johhan Fredersen (Alfred Abel), who is the Lord of their city, Maria falls in love, playing into the hands of the heartless Lord Fredersen who wants to rid Metropolis of its poor working masses.
