Mike Enslin (John Cusack), a cynical writer who investigates supernatural phenomena, travels to spend a night in room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel. The hotel's manager, Gerald Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), initally objects to allowing Mike to stay in the room, which is said to harbor evil spirits and is off limits to guests.
