After well-meaning dad Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) throws an over the top birthday party for his son without his wife Miranda's (Sally Field) knowledge, she files for divorce, citing it as the last straw in a long history of poor parenting choices. Crushed by the fact that he will only be permitted to see his children, Lydia (Lisa Jakub), Chris (Matthew Lawrence) and Natalie (Mara Wilson), once a week, Daniel comes up with an ingenious plan to see his children. With the help of his brother's (Harvey Fierstein) skills as a makeup artist and his abilities as a voice actor, Daniel disguises himself as Mrs. Doubtfire, a Scottish nanny, and gets hired as caretaker for his own kids.
