Howard Beale (Peter Finch), the UBS head anchorman, gets the word that he's too old and needs to be replaced. Even though the news is delivered by his best friend, network executive Max Schumacher (William Holden), Howard can't stomach the idea and announces that he's going to commit suicide on his final program.
