Jonathan Safran Foer (Elijah Wood) travels to the Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis during World War II. In Odessa, Jonathan meets up with his translator, Alex (Eugene Hutz), who learned English from old movies and a thesaurus, and Alex's grandfather (Boris Leskin), who acts as their driver and guide even though he claims to be blind.
