Maximus (Russell Crowe), a once highly respected Roman general, is betrayed and put into slavery by Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the son of the recently deceased emperor. Once in captivity, Maximus trains to be a gladiator and fights in battles staged at the Coliseum. The former general's fame grows as he wins battle after battle, but his true motivation is to avenge the murder of his wife and son by killing Commodus and returning the government of Rome its people.
