Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck) is a talented reverse engineer who is hired by technology firms to work on top secret projects and have his short term memory erased when he completes the job. When Michael begins work on his newest project for powerful businessman James Rethrick (Aaron Eckhart), he believes that he will receive four billion dollars for his troubles. Instead, he awakens to discover that he has forfeited his money and sent himself an envelope full of random objects. To figure out just what happened during the last few months, Michael will need the help of his friend Shorty (Paul Giamatti) and bioscientist Rachel Porter (Uma Thurman), his beautiful ex-coworker.
