In the late 13th century, William Wallace (Mel Gibson) returns to Scotland to find that the king has died without an heir. After the king of England, Edward the Longshanks (Patrick McGoohan), seizes the throne and his wife (Catherine McCormack) is killed, Wallace leads a grassroots army of rebels intent on regaining Scotland's freedom from English tyranny, becoming a hero and a legend.
