Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler), a man who lost his family in the September 11 attacks, has suffered a mental breakdown. Living in his own world and shutting out all of his painful memories, Charlie drifts along on the streets of New York City on his scooter and lives off of an insurance settlement. When Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle), Charlie's roommate from dental school, sees him on the street, Charlie at first doesn't recognize his old friend. As the two begin to reconnect, Charlie begins to recover from his grief and Alan learns that he has been neglecting his family and all of the things he has to be thankful for.
